The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has moved decisively to address internal and public debate sparked by recent remarks from its Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, with Party reaffirming the legitimacy of party organs, unity, and disciplined engagement as the party prepares for future political contests.
In a strongly worded statement, ODM noted that Senator Sifuna questioned the legality of certain national officials on the basis that they were elected by the National Governing Council. However, the party pointed out what he termed a “fundamental contradiction,” reminding members and the public that Sifuna himself was elected Secretary General by the same National Governing Council in February 2018 and served in that role until February 2022, before being endorsed by the National Delegates Convention.
“One cannot selectively invalidate the very processes that conferred legitimacy upon oneself,” the statement read, underscoring ODM’s adherence to its constitution and democratic procedures.
ODM also highlighted inconsistencies in the Secretary General’s public positions regarding coalition politics. He recalled that in July 2025, Sifuna publicly argued that ODM could not afford to wait until 2027 to deliberate on its post-election strategy. Yet, the party leader observed that the Secretary General now appears to question the urgency of engaging potential pre-election partners.
“As a responsible political party preparing to form the next government, we must plan ahead. Strategic engagement is not panic; it is prudence,” The Party Stated, adding that democratic space should not be mistaken for disorder or chaos.
The ODM leader further emphasized that frequent comparisons with other coalitions should not distract the party from its own priorities, values, and strategic direction. He reiterated that ODM’s actions are guided by its founding ideology and the long-standing philosophy aimed at building a just, inclusive, and democratic Kenya.
In line with this vision, ODM announced that the party remains committed to intergenerational dialogue and plans to convene a national conclave to strengthen ODM by ensuring representation and opportunities across all generations.
Reaffirming party discipline, the statement made it clear that while debate within ODM is welcome, it must be responsible and aligned with collective decisions made by party organs. “No individual, however senior, is above the collective decisions of the Party,” ODM cautioned.
The party leader concluded by calling on all ODM members to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to the party’s shared vision, stressing that ODM remains united, strong, and firmly anchored in its founding values as it continues to engage members, consult its organs, and pursue negotiations in the best interests of the Kenyan people.
