National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has intensified internal debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after publicly calling for the expulsion of the party’s Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Speaking on Monday, February 9, 2026, during a fundraiser at Kisaku Primary School in Suba South Constituency, Mbadi accused Sifuna of consistently opposing the party’s leadership and taking positions that contradict decisions made by ODM’s top organs.

Mbadi argued that ODM’s strength lies in unity and adherence to collective decisions, insisting that the party cannot remain cohesive if senior officials openly push agendas that run counter to its agreed direction.

“The party ODM is very strong, and I can tell you for sure there is no way that ODM will be disbanded. ODM will remain solid the way Raila left it,” Mbadi said.

He further warned that accommodating leaders whose views oppose official party policy would weaken ODM, adding that the party must be willing to let some members exit if they cannot align with its core principles and leadership.

“If you think that ODM will remain solid by having everybody there, including people whose agenda is opposite to what ODM wants, you are daydreaming,” Mbadi stated.

Mbadi said party members who disagree with policies endorsed by the party leader after Central Committee meetings should be allowed to leave, arguing that unity should be built around shared values and direction.

“You must allow some people to exit ODM at this stage. If someone does not want to agree with ODM policies and with the policies spelt out by the party leader after convening the Central Committee meeting, that person should be left to go,” he added.

Singling out Sifuna, Mbadi maintained that the Nairobi Senator is already conflicted and cannot continue serving in ODM’s leadership.

“Somebody like Sifuna will not remain in ODM because he is already conflicted,” Mbadi concluded.

The remarks are expected to deepen divisions within ODM, which has recently faced internal debate over its cooperation with the government and its strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election. Political observers say Mbadi’s comments raise critical questions about party discipline, internal democracy, and the future role of dissenting voices within ODM.
