In a dramatic turn of events, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially removed Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General.
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Tuesday, February 11, 2026. The party announced that Sifuna has been relieved of his responsibilities with immediate effect.
“Party National Executive Committee meeting in Mombasa today has resolved to relieve SG @edwinsifuna of his responsibilities with immediate effect,” ODM stated.
Catherine Omanyo to Act as Secretary General
Following Sifuna’s removal, ODM confirmed that Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo will take over in an acting capacity.
“Effectively, Hon. Catherine Omanyo, who is one of the Deputy Secretary Generals, will act in this position until a substantive holder of the office is elected,” the party added.
Omanyo’s appointment ensures continuity in the party’s administrative and strategic operations as ODM prepares for internal restructuring and future political engagements.
Rising Tensions Within ODM
Sifuna’s removal comes amid growing internal tensions within ODM, particularly over the party’s direction following recent political developments. The party has been navigating complex realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, including discussions around coalition arrangements and its future outside the Azimio coalition.
Observers note that the move signals deeper shifts within the party’s leadership structure as ODM seeks to redefine its strategy and strengthen unity ahead of the next electoral cycle.
With Catherine Omanyo stepping in as acting Secretary General, attention now turns to how the party will manage its transition and whether further leadership changes could follow.
Sifuna, who has been a prominent voice within ODM and national politics, has yet to publicly respond to the decision.
The leadership shake-up marks a significant chapter for ODM as it recalibrates its political direction in a rapidly evolving political landscape.
