Mama Ida Odinga has publicly expressed her support for the removal of Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), calling it a necessary step to safeguard the party’s identity and future.
In a strong statement, Mama Ida said she was “thrilled” by the decision, describing it as a bold cleanup that aligns with the principles and vision of the party’s founding leadership.
“I'm thrilled that Edwin Sifuna was finally ousted as ODM Secretary General. This is exactly the kind of bold cleanup Baba would have loved and demanded to protect the party's soul. Long live ODM!” she declared.
Protecting ODM’s Legacy
Ida Odinga emphasized that the move reflects the type of firm leadership that her husband, the late Raila Odinga widely known as Baba stood for throughout his political career.
Her remarks signal support from key figures closely associated with ODM’s founding leadership, reinforcing the view among some party loyalists that decisive action was needed to preserve unity and discipline.
Sifuna’s removal by ODM’s National Executive Committee in February 2026 has triggered mixed reactions across the political spectrum. While some leaders and supporters have praised the decision as necessary for party stability, others have criticised it, calling it unconstitutional and politically motivated.
Mama Ida’s endorsement adds weight to the faction backing the leadership’s decision, highlighting the growing divide between those supporting the new direction and those opposing the move.
The leadership changes come at a critical time as ODM reorganises following Raila Odinga’s death and prepares for the 2027 general elections. Party unity, leadership clarity, and strategic direction will be crucial in determining ODM’s role in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
Mama Ida’s statement underscores the emotional and political significance of the leadership transition, as ODM seeks to preserve its legacy while navigating a new chapter.
