Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has taken a firm stance against recent statements by ODM leader Oburu Odinga, who indicated the party’s interest in the Deputy President position in the 2027 elections.
In a video shared on social media by political strategist Saitabao Kanchory, Ruku insisted that the Deputy Presidency will not be open in 2027, asserting that Kithure Kindiki’s position is secure and will not be “shortchanged.”
Ruku urged ODM party members to temper their ambitions, emphasizing that while the Mount Kenya region has agreed to participate in the broad-based government, the Deputy President seat is not negotiable until Kindiki’s term ends. He encouraged the party to plan for future negotiations after 2032 rather than attempting to disrupt the current arrangement.
The statement signals ongoing tensions within Kenya’s political alliances, particularly around power-sharing agreements between ODM and UDA. Ruku’s remarks reaffirm the current government’s commitment to maintaining stability in leadership positions while navigating coalition dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
