Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has firmly dismissed speculation that he is eyeing the Homa Bay County gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Elections.
Speaking at a press conference during a public function on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Mbadi downplayed claims that he intends to contest for the county’s top job, emphasizing that his focus remains on national service.
“I am now a Cabinet Secretary, and we are in 2026. To be honest with you, I can only go up; I don’t want to go down. It will be foolish of me to go back to Homa Bay. I can only go up, and I want to lead this country’s future,” Mbadi stated.
The Cabinet Secretary made it clear that his political trajectory is aimed at higher national leadership rather than returning to county politics. His remarks have sparked discussion about his potential future ambitions within Kenya’s political landscape.
The Homa Bay County gubernatorial race is already shaping up to be highly competitive ahead of 2027. Incumbent Governor Gladys Wanga is widely expected to seek re-election as she aims to retain her seat.
