Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday visited Mbeere North Constituency, bringing government development initiatives ahead of the upcoming by-elections.
The visit highlighted ongoing socio-economic projects, including the construction of 12 fresh produce markets across Embu County, with the Ishiara Market in Mbeere North taking center stage. The markets are expected to support small-scale traders, boost agricultural production, ensure better earnings for farmers, and create jobs for local youth.
Kindiki also outlined plans to tackle perennial water shortages through an elaborate water reticulation and connectivity programme from the Seven Forks dams, which aims to serve Mbeere North and neighboring constituencies for both domestic and irrigation purposes.
During his visit, Kindiki engaged with traders and residents of Ishiara, sharing a late lunch and expressing appreciation for their support of Leo Wamuthende, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the Mbeere North by-election. Residents reaffirmed their commitment to electing Wamuthende as the constituency’s next Member of Parliament.
“The Government is committed to transforming Mbeere North into a hub of economic opportunity,” Kindiki said. “These markets, alongside improved water infrastructure, will dignify the work of farmers and traders while creating jobs and income opportunities for thousands of residents, particularly our youth.”
Observers noted that the timing of the visit, coinciding with the run-up to the by-election, underscores the government’s focus on local development as a key electoral issue. Residents expressed optimism that the new infrastructure would reduce the daily challenges they face, from water scarcity to limited market access.
