Joseph Oyugi Magwanga has officially resigned as the Deputy Governor of Homa Bay County, bringing to an end months of speculation over his strained working relationship with Governor Gladys Wanga.
The resignation follows prolonged tensions between the county boss and her deputy, with Magwanga reportedly staying away from office since November 2025. In a statement sent to newsrooms, Magwanga cited frustration within the county leadership that he said had prevented him from effectively carrying out his constitutional mandate.
“In 2022, I accepted the honour of serving as the running mate for Her Excellency Gladys Wanga after consultations presided over by the late former prime minister and ODM party leader Raila Odinga,” Magwanga stated.
His resignation marks a significant political development in Homa Bay, a county considered a stronghold of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The fallout between the governor and her deputy has drawn attention in recent months, with questions raised about internal leadership dynamics within the county government.
Magwanga’s exit now sets the stage for the constitutional process of filling the vacancy, even as political observers speculate on the broader implications for county politics and ODM’s internal cohesion in the region.
