The Returning Officer has cancelled results from Garbatulla Polling Station following the discovery of a 100-vote discrepancy linked to the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS).
According to election officials, the variance between the manually recorded votes and the figures transmitted through the KIEMS kit raised concerns about the integrity of the results from the station. The discrepancy prompted an immediate review, after which the Returning Officer nullified the polling station’s outcome pending further verification.
The KIEMS system, used by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), is designed to enhance transparency in voter identification and results transmission. However, any inconsistencies between physical forms and electronically transmitted data often trigger scrutiny and, in some cases, cancellation of results.
Election officials indicated that the cancellation was necessary to safeguard the credibility of the process and ensure that only verified results are included in the final tally. It remains unclear whether a repeat vote will be ordered at the polling station or whether reconciliation procedures will resolve the anomaly.
The development underscores the continued sensitivity surrounding electoral processes in Kenya, where accuracy and transparency remain critical to public confidence in election outcomes.
