Edwin Sifuna has credited former President Uhuru Kenyatta for playing a major role in campaigning for Raila Odinga during the 2022 General Election.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with K24 TV, the Nairobi Senator said Uhuru gave his full backing to the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, lending both political influence and financial support to the campaign.
Sifuna dismissed claims that the retired president did not do enough to secure Raila’s victory, stating that Uhuru personally opened up the Mount Kenya region to Azimio’s campaign team and demonstrated firm political commitment to the coalition’s success.
“Uhuru helped in a great way to campaign for Raila’s presidency in 2022. I have heard people say that Uhuru did not do enough for Raila’s election. Uhuru opened up the mountain region for us to campaign. Our only responsibility was to convince the people, but some leaders in Azimio made us lose the elections because of their ill-speaking despite the facilitation we had from Uhuru Kenyatta,” Sifuna said.
He attributed Raila’s defeat not to a lack of support from Uhuru, but to internal mismanagement and communication missteps by some leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Sifuna’s remarks reopen debate about the dynamics of the 2022 presidential race and the internal challenges that may have shaped the outcome, even as political alignments continue to shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.
