Joe Nyutu Downplays Claims of Sifuna’s Imminent Move to DCP

"Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has dismissed reports that ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is on the verge of joining the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), describing the move as merely an open invitation rather than a confirmed defection."

Joe Nyutu has weighed in on speculation surrounding the future of Edwin Sifuna amid growing uncertainty within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the Murang’a Senator dismissed claims that Sifuna’s defection to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) is imminent. Nyutu clarified that the talk of Sifuna joining DCP was simply an invitation extended by his party leader and not an indication of a concluded political shift.

“For Sifuna joining DCP, that was just an invite by my party leader, and at that time was saying that should ODM kick you out, then you are free to come and join our party,” Nyutu stated.

He emphasised that political parties are at liberty to recruit leaders they consider valuable, adding that the final decision rests entirely with Sifuna.

“Minimally, everybody is free to promote their parties and to invite good leaders like Sifuna to join their parties. Whether Sifuna is going to join DCP will be his decision to make,” he added.

Nyutu’s remarks come against the backdrop of a deepening internal rift within ODM, which has placed Sifuna’s position under increased scrutiny. Political observers note that Kenya’s political landscape remains fluid, with shifting alliances and strategic invitations becoming increasingly common as parties reposition themselves ahead of the next general election.

For now, however, Nyutu insists that talk of Sifuna’s defection remains speculative rather than definitive.
