Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has sparked fresh political controversy after alleging that the recent by-election in Mbeere North Constituency was marred by electoral malpractice.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Muturi claimed that the by-election process was manipulated through the transportation of voters from other parts of the country to influence the outcome in favour of a preferred candidate.
“The Mbeere North by-election was blatantly rigged. Individuals were ferried from different parts of the country by a rogue government and facilitated to vote in favour of their preferred candidate,” Muturi wrote.
According to Muturi, his claims are based on an encounter he had while touring several counties in the central region. He said that during his visit to Nakuru County, Nyandarua County and Nyeri County, three individuals approached him and made a surprising admission.
The former speaker stated that the individuals confessed to travelling to Mbeere North to vote in the by-election despite not being registered voters in the constituency.
According to Muturi, the individuals told him they had been transported and facilitated by individuals linked to the government to participate in the election.
The allegations are likely to intensify political debate around the conduct of by-elections in Kenya, especially amid rising concerns from opposition figures over electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general election.
However, Muturi did not provide further details or evidence to support his claims, and electoral authorities are yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
The by-election in Mbeere North Constituency forms part of a series of recent by-elections held across the country as political parties continue positioning themselves for the next national polls.
