A political dispute is intensifying within the Laikipia County Assembly after Gitahi Macharia accused Joshua Irungu of meddling in the internal leadership affairs of the assembly.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the Githiga Ward legislator alleged that the governor had taken issue with recent leadership changes in the house, which saw the election of a new majority leader from Tigithi Ward.
Claims of Political Interference
Macharia claimed that the governor pushed for the resignation of John Gichuki from the position of majority leader. According to the MCA, the move resulted in the installation of Nicholas Mwaniki as the new majority leader.
He further alleged that the county boss is now seeking additional changes within key committees of the assembly, raising concerns about what he described as executive interference in legislative matters.
“The leadership of the assembly is the sole responsibility of the members of the county assembly. It is not right for the executive to attempt to influence or control how the house organises itself,” Macharia said.
The claims have sparked fresh debate about the independence of county assemblies and the relationship between the executive and legislative arms of devolved governments in Laikipia County.
Political observers say the dispute could escalate if the two sides fail to resolve the matter, potentially affecting legislative operations within the county assembly.
