Johnson Sakaja has announced his plan to seek a second term as the governor of Nairobi County, saying he hopes to make history as the first county boss of the capital city to serve two full terms.
Speaking during an interview on a local television station on Sunday, March 8, Sakaja defended the performance of his administration, noting that although criticism often dominates online platforms, the situation on the ground tells a different story.
According to the governor, several initiatives implemented by his administration are already benefiting city residents, particularly families with school-going children.
“When you come online someone might think nothing is going on in Nairobi. But go to the ground; you will find parents saving money because their children are eating for free in schools,” Sakaja said.
He added that his administration has revived several stalled projects that had remained incomplete since the tenure of the first governor of the city. Sakaja also noted that his government has cleared pending bills that had previously hindered operations within the county workforce.
Transformation of the CBD
The governor further highlighted efforts to improve the outlook of the city centre, saying his administration has undertaken projects aimed at transforming the face of the Nairobi Central Business District.
However, he acknowledged that vandalism continues to affect some of the development initiatives, resulting in losses for the county government.
Eye on 2027 Re-Election
Sakaja confirmed that he will contest again in the 2027 Kenyan General Election, expressing confidence that voters will judge his administration based on the progress achieved during his first term.
“When the time comes I will seek re-election, and I will make history as the first Nairobi Governor to serve two terms,” he stated.
If successful, Sakaja would become the first governor to secure and complete two terms since the establishment of county governments under Kenya’s devolved system.
