President William Ruto has appointed Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy as the new chairperson of the National Land Commission.
The appointment was formalised through a gazette notice published on Thursday, March 12, 2026, officially confirming the leadership of the commission after the nominees were vetted and approved by the National Assembly of Kenya.
According to the gazette notice, the appointments were made under Article 250(2)(c) of the Constitution and Section 7(2) of the National Land Commission Act, which outlines the legal procedure for constituting the commission.
The notice confirmed that Alawy will serve as chairperson for a six-year term.
In the same gazette notice, the President also appointed six commissioners who will serve alongside the chairperson in managing the affairs of the constitutional body.
The commissioners include Susan Kihika Oyatsi, Daniel Murithi Muiruri, Kigen Vincent Cheruiyot, Julie Ouma Oseko, Mohamed Abdi Haji Mohamed and Mary Jiane Sentei.
The commissioners represent different counties across the country including Kakamega, Meru, Kericho, Siaya, Mandera and Kajiado.
Their gazettement formally completes the reconstitution of the commission, enabling the new team to assume office and begin executing its mandate.
The National Land Commission is one of Kenya’s independent constitutional commissions responsible for managing public land on behalf of both national and county governments.
The commission also advises the government on land policy and investigates historical land injustices across the country.
With the appointments now confirmed, the new leadership is expected to oversee land administration processes, help resolve land disputes and support ongoing reforms aimed at improving land governance.
The reconstitution of the commission is seen as an important step in strengthening oversight and management of land resources, an area that has historically been central to legal, political and social debates in Kenya.
