Fred Matiang'i has criticised what he described as excessive government spending, particularly the growing allocation to State House Nairobi.
Speaking during a church service at Weithaga ACK Church in Murang’a County, the Jubilee presidential flagbearer said the current budget reflects what he termed as historic wastage of public resources.
Matiang’i questioned why the presidency requires significantly more funding than essential public institutions such as Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
He told congregants that it was difficult to justify a Sh17 billion allocation to State House while key public sectors such as healthcare and education continue to face financial constraints.
According to Matiang’i, State House does not provide medical services like a referral hospital, yet its budget allocation surpasses that of institutions that handle critical healthcare needs.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary claimed that the increased budget could be intended to facilitate political spending ahead of the 2027 elections.
He pledged that if elected President, he would drastically reduce the State House allocation and redirect the savings to priority sectors.
Matiang’i said his proposal would see the budget cut by 80 percent, leaving approximately Sh3 billion for State House operations.
He added that about Sh7 billion would be redirected to the education sector and another Sh7 billion to healthcare services.
The presidential hopeful also dismissed claims that there are divisions within the United Opposition camp.
According to him, attempts to split the opposition alliance have failed, adding that the leaders involved remain committed to working together ahead of the next election.
