George Koimburi has said he will table a motion seeking to allow Members of Parliament to contribute to debates in their mother tongues.
The Juja legislator argued that the move would promote inclusivity and cultural pride within the House by giving leaders the freedom to express themselves in languages they are most comfortable with.
Koimburi made the remarks following the release of 22 members of the Mihiriga Kenda Muiyuru group, who had been detained for three days at Kibii Police Station in Juja.
The group had been accused of engaging in illegal activities, including female genital mutilation (FGM), but the allegations were not substantiated. They were later released on free bond without being arraigned in court.
The MP criticised the arrests, saying the group’s rights to worship and practise their culture had been violated.
He maintained that the group is legally registered and should not face harassment for observing Agikuyu cultural traditions.
Koimburi said the proposed motion is part of a broader effort to promote cultural recognition and inclusivity within Parliament.
