Delegates of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nairobi have formally endorsed Winnie Odinga for the position of Deputy Party Leader.
The endorsement was made during a consultative meeting held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, bringing together ODM delegates from all 17 constituencies within the capital.
Push for Nairobi Representation
Leaders backing Winnie Odinga argued that Nairobi has long lacked adequate representation in the party’s top decision-making structures. They emphasized that elevating her to the deputy party leader position would ensure the city has a stronger voice within ODM’s leadership.
Speaking at the meeting held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, Makadara MP George Aladwa said the absence of a clear representative from Nairobi at the party’s top level has been a long-standing concern.
Leadership Gap After Raila Odinga
According to Aladwa, the leadership gap became more pronounced following the death of ODM’s founder, Raila Odinga. He noted that Nairobi leaders are now keen on ensuring the region is adequately represented in the party hierarchy moving forward.
Consolidating Support Within the Party
The endorsement signals a growing push within ODM ranks to reorganize its leadership structure and accommodate emerging leaders. Winnie Odinga’s backing by Nairobi delegates is expected to influence ongoing internal discussions about the party’s future leadership direction.
ODM is yet to officially announce any changes to its leadership, but the endorsement adds momentum to calls for restructuring within the party.
