Ruto’s Nyanza tour signals 2027 political push

"Ruto called for unity"

President William Ruto’s four-day tour of the Nyanza region doubled as a calculated political offensive, as he sought to loosen the opposition’s grip on the area while packaging development as his main selling point ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Moving across Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori, the President rolled out a series of project launches and inspections, but his messaging remained consistent—unity, inclusion and a call to shift focus from politics to development.

“We are building one united country where development is not determined by how people voted,” Ruto said during several stops.

The tour began with a closed-door meeting in Kisumu, bringing together a cross-section of leaders in what insiders described as both a consultative forum and a political icebreaker. Leaders raised concerns over stalled projects and delayed funding, but the meeting also signalled Ruto’s intention to cultivate new alliances in a region long considered an opposition stronghold.

On Saturday, the President headlined the launch of the Standard Gauge Railway extension from Naivasha toward Malaba, a project he framed as transformative for regional trade. In political terms, however, the event—also attended by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni—offered a stage to project authority and regional influence.

He proceeded to launch a blue economy project in Kisumu and affordable housing in Siaya, before turning to smaller, people-centred projects such as markets, roads and electrification.

Analysts say the mix of mega infrastructure and grassroots projects reflects a deliberate attempt to appeal to both local leaders and ordinary voters.

In Homa Bay and Migori, Ruto’s tone sharpened subtly, urging residents to back leaders who prioritise development over political loyalty. Without naming rivals, he appeared to take aim at opposition figures who have historically dominated the region.

“Politics alone cannot change lives. What changes lives are projects and opportunities,” he said.

The President’s presence in churches, markets and roadside stops further underscored a strategy of direct voter engagement—an approach that proved effective in his 2022 campaign.

Local leaders, while welcoming the projects, maintained a cautious stance. Some acknowledged the political significance of the visit, noting that Nyanza has increasingly become a battleground as alliances shift nationally.

“This region is no longer politically static,” said a local MP who attended the Kisumu meeting. “There is real competition for influence.”

The tour comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions nationally, including a public fallout between Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, which has reshaped political alignments and opened new fronts for contestation.

For Ruto, penetrating Nyanza could significantly alter the electoral map in 2027. Even a modest gain in the region would weaken the opposition’s traditional stronghold and strengthen his re-election prospects.

Throughout the tour, however, the President avoided direct confrontation, instead leaning on a development narrative to make his political case.

“Let us work together and focus on what will uplift our people,” he said.
