Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has warned Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to brace for stiff competition in the 2027 elections, signaling early political maneuvering in the region.
Speaking at a community forum in Navagara, Malava Constituency, Mudavadi said young leaders within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) are ready to challenge Natembeya if he seeks re-election.
“I want to tell Natembeya, don't act too clever. We have been in politics longer, we are only quiet, but don't think we cannot do politics. We will take you home in 2027. We have young men and women ready to overtake him,” Mudavadi said.
Trans Nzoia, part of Kenya’s western region, has been a UDA stronghold, but Mudavadi’s remarks indicate that intra-party competition may intensify as leaders position themselves for future contests. Natembeya has served as governor since 2017 and is seeking a second term, but tensions within the party suggest his hold may not be secure.
Mudavadi also criticized former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, questioning his credibility in challenging the government. “Where does Matiang'i get the moral authority to challenge the government when he has many questions to answer? Kenyans have not forgotten how hundreds of bodies were found in River Yala during his term,” he said.
The Prime CS accused Matiang’i of blocking administrative requests in Malava, noting that the constituency only received its North and South divisions under President William Ruto’s administration.
Urging Western Kenyans to back the government, Mudavadi emphasized the need to position themselves for the presidency after Ruto. “We must position ourselves well to take over from Ruto after he finishes his two terms. You think others are waiting? We must guard ourselves by giving the government 100 percent support. The people from other regions are not sleeping, they are planning, we must be vigilant and work in unity,” he said.
