Winnie Odinga appeared at the ODM’s official NDC at Jamhuri Grounds, despite her previous association with the Linda Wananchi faction, which was holding a parallel meeting at Ufungamano House. Her unexpected presence signaled a significant moment in the party’s ongoing internal realignments.
In her remarks, Winnie officially recognised Oburu Odinga as the party leader, stating:
“Congratulations my party leader, I recognise you. As they call you the youth leader, I hope you will open space for the young people.” She drew laughter from the delegates with her lighthearted comment, “Leo sikuja kuchoma,”
signifying her intent to avoid inflaming factional tensions while addressing key party priorities.
Shifting the spotlight from internal politics, Winnie read messages from young Kenyans highlighting the need for employment and leadership opportunities. She stressed that the party cannot overlook the plight of the youth, noting the achievements of recent protests (maandamano) and the urgent need to address ongoing social and economic challenges.
“We cannot overlook maandamano and what it has achieved. We cannot overlook the suffering of the young people,” she told the delegates.
