ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has sharply criticized police over what he described as an unwarranted show of force outside Ufungamano House in Nairobi. His faction, the Linda Wananchi group, had planned a parallel National Delegates Conference (NDC) and had formally notified authorities of the gathering.
“Tulipeana ilani kwamba tutakuwa na mkutano hapa, lakini jambo la kusikitisha ni kwamba malori ya polisi yamejaa hapa nje,” Sifuna said.
(We gave notice that we would hold a meeting here, but unfortunately, the place is now filled with police trucks outside.)
Sifuna emphasized that the meeting was intended to be peaceful and administrative, focusing on party matters rather than protests or unrest. He described the heavy police presence as unnecessary and intimidating, raising broader concerns about shrinking democratic space for political gatherings in Kenya.
