President William Ruto on Saturday defended his administration’s development record, declaring an end to what he termed as “deceptive politics” as he launched multi-million shilling projects in Taita Taveta County.
Speaking in Voi Town, Ruto said his government was focused on fulfilling campaign promises, arguing that Kenyans were witnessing tangible results on the ground.
“We are ending the era of deceptive politics where leaders make promises they neither plan nor intend to keep,” he said. “Across the country, we are honouring our commitments by implementing our manifesto and delivering long-overdue projects.”
During the visit, the President laid the foundation stone for the construction of the KSh300 million Voi Modern Market, a facility expected to accommodate more than 1,000 traders and equipped with cold storage to reduce post-harvest losses.
He also launched the construction of the KSh950 million Voi Stadium, a 10,000-capacity facility aimed at nurturing local talent and boosting sports development in the coastal region.
Ruto said the projects were part of a broader government plan to uplift small-scale traders and create economic opportunities, particularly in underserved areas.
“The market will provide a dignified working environment for traders while reducing losses that have for years affected farmers and small businesses,” he said.
The Head of State has in recent weeks intensified development tours across the country, combining project launches with political messaging as the government seeks to counter criticism from rivals who accuse it of underperformance and broken promises.
Opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have sharply criticised Ruto’s administration, alleging mismanagement and failure to address the rising cost of living — claims the government has repeatedly dismissed.
Ruto maintained that his administration remains committed to transforming livelihoods through infrastructure, markets and youth-focused investments, insisting that delivery — not rhetoric — would define his presidency.
“These projects are not promises; they are commitments we are implementing for the people of Kenya,” he said.
