Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared that the opposition is set to sweep all seats in the upcoming by-elections, framing the expected outcome as a clear message of public dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza government. Addressing a gathering in Nyamira, Matiang’i said Kenyans were increasingly frustrated with the administration’s leadership, economic policies, and alleged corruption.
He claimed that the by-elections would serve as a nationwide protest vote, signaling that citizens had lost confidence in President William Ruto’s regime. According to Matiang’i, the strong support for opposition candidates reflects widespread discontent over rising living costs, unfulfilled promises, and what he termed persistent governance failures.
Matiang’i also issued a stern warning to the government, urging it not to interfere with the electoral process. He insisted there were growing concerns about potential attempts to influence the outcome in favor of Kenya Kwanza candidates. He cautioned state actors against “playing games” with the democratic process, emphasizing the need for a free, transparent, and credible poll.
The former CS further accused the government of misusing public resources in campaign activities, arguing that taxpayers’ money should be channeled toward improving essential services rather than financing political theatrics. His comments echoed swelling criticism from opposition leaders who have accused the administration of using state machinery to tilt electoral contests.
Political observers note that the by-elections will serve as an important indicator of public sentiment, especially as the country inches closer to the next general election. Should the opposition achieve the clean sweep Matiang’i predicts, it could reshape political dynamics and intensify scrutiny of the government’s performance.
The by-elections are expected to attract significant national attention, with both sides framing the contests as symbolic battles for political legitimacy and public trust.
