Kuria Points to UDA’s By-Election Performance
Former Presidential Advisor Moses Kuria has argued that recent by-election victories by the ruling United Democratic Alliance demonstrate the party’s growing national strength beyond traditional political strongholds.
Reacting after UDA won three by-elections held on May 14, 2026, Kuria described the results as proof that the party’s appeal now stretches across multiple regions.
“Ruto Can Win Without Mt Kenya”
In remarks shared online, Kuria boldly stated that President William Ruto could retain power even without a single vote from the Mt Kenya region.
He pointed to what he termed as UDA’s “100 percent performance” in the mini-polls, arguing that Kenyan politics is moving away from dependence on one dominant regional voting bloc.
Mt Kenya Political Realignments Intensify
Kuria’s comments come at a politically sensitive moment as factions allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continue challenging UDA’s influence in Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Recent contests, including the Ol Kalou and Mbeere North by-elections, have increasingly been viewed as political tests of who truly commands influence within the region.
Debate Over Kenya’s Political Math
Political analysts say Kuria’s remarks reflect changing electoral calculations within Kenya, where parties are attempting to build broader national coalitions rather than relying solely on regional strongholds.
However, critics argue that Mt Kenya remains one of the country’s most influential voting blocs and dismissing its importance could prove politically risky.
